Description
“What is life?
It is the flash of a firefly in the night.
It is the breath of a buffalo in the wintertime.
It is the little shadow which runs across the grass and loses itself in the sunset.”
~Crowfoot, “Blackfoot warrior and orator”
The bond between a wild mare and her newborn foal is one of necessity for the wee wild one to grow and develop into a contributing member of a wild herd, either as a filly or colt, later to be a harem mare or band stallion.
This “Wild Bond” begins in Theodore Roosevelt National Park in March after a snow storm, with only an occasional flake as a reminder of what had transpired earlier. No matter the weather these wild mares have this innate sense ingrained in their wild maternal clocks and will often wait until after a passing storm before laying down to give birth to new life. Often, as CSU techs, we would document multiple births after storms had rolled through.
Whiskey, was no exception as she waited until the right time to bring the badlands of North Dakota this hours old new life!
