Description

“Promise to stay wild with me. We’ll seek and return and stay and find beauty and the extraordinary in all the spaces we can claim. We’ll know how to live. How to breathe magic into the mundane.” ~Victoria Erickson

The wilds…are what helped make America what it is today. At least their ancestors did. They carried the mail on the Pony Express trail, and pulled the wagons up Hastings Pass where one can still witness the remnants of ruts left by those great wagon trains that came through this area in the late 1800’s. Our guide was full of historical and interesting stories of those days gone by!

The rugged country we were in was created by great upheavals from earthquakes and it provided stunning vistas, for we were in the Beehive State…Utah, near Dugway, a government proving ground, in an HMA taking its name from the Goshute word Onaqui, meaning a place of salt.

During the 1800s miners looking for gold gave the name, Onaqui, to this remote mountain range which lies southwest of Salt Lake City.  The entire area is surrounded by mountains big and small, with names like Sheeprock, Simpson, Davis and of course the largest range – Onaqui!  History is littered everywhere – the CCC Camp that was there from 1939-1942, the Pony Express Station right next to it, and of course almost all life centers around water….springs….Simpson, Coyote, Winter, Grassy, Six-Mile.

I was there in the spring of 2017 working with my friend, Jamie, on capturing footage for the fund raising video for Wild Lands, Wild Horses (then called Taken Back the West).  The sunsets were incredible and the backdrop of the mountain ranges provided scenes that left us breathless.  When one got off the well-traveled roads hidden treasures of wilds would appear!
