Indomitable Will

“Strength does not come from physical capacity. It comes from an indomitable will.”

Satellite and his indomitable will and his ability to disappear make him the wild stallion I have photographed the most here in Theodore Roosevelt National Park.

Thursday afternoon he completely disappeared with his band of mares and two of Red Face’s yearlings tagging along. My friend, Toni, was here with me from South Dakota and we followed safely behind them in a deep gully knowing they were looking for water.

Well they vanished! There was a split in the gully and we choose to go left, they obviously went right. We lost them and came up on the prairie to look for them and could not see them anywhere! We kept walking back and forth, rubbing our heads and asking, “How did he do that?”

It wasn’t until we saw Red Face, about 1/4 mile away, tear across the prairie that we realized Satellite must be in that direction. We hightailed it toward Red Face and as we stood on the edge of another narrow gully we saw Satellite way below us with his band of mares, looking up at us with water dripping from his mouth like, “Ha, I fooled you!” Red Face’s yearlings had been well scolded by the time we arrived and were back with their momma’s!

This small and mighty wild stallion has become the most intriguing to me and he continues to gain my respect!

Have an awesome Monday!!! Thank you as always for all your support!!!
